Officer Randy Melton has been asked by the SHHH
organization to hold a workshop at their International Convention in Seattle, Washington.

His workshop will be on Sunday, June 23, 2002 from 9:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

His workshop will on what the deaf/hard of hearing community need to know about law enforcement.  The workshop will consist of three topics:

First is what deaf/hard of hearing citizens need to know about law enforcement officers if they ever come in contact with an officer on a traffic stop or being arrested.  They need to know what to do and not do when they are dealing with a law enforcement officer.

Second he will go over some of the topics he teaches law enforcement officers about the deaf/hard of hearing.

Third is how deaf/hard of hearing citizens need to know
their rights when dealing with a law enforcement agency.  How they can work with their law enforcement agency to make sure their needs are met.

If you can make it to the International Convention in Seattle, Washington, I hope to see you there.

New guidance is now available from the Board on assistive listening systems, devices which enhance the sound quality and volume of public address systems for persons who are hard of hearing including those who use hearing aids.

The ADA Accessibility Guidelines require assistive listening systems in certain assembly areas, such as theaters, concert and lecture halls and arenas. Under a project with the Lexington Center, a series of technical bulletins have been developed that explain the different types of systems available and provide guidance on their use and installation. These bulletins stem from an earlier Board study that collected information on assistive listening systems, reviewed the state-of-the-art, and surveyed consumers, service providers, and manufacturers. The series includes bulletins designed for different audiences, including consumers, system installers, and the operators of assembly facilities and other venues where assistive listening systems are typically provided.

The bulletins are available on the Board's web site at www.access_board.gov
